Brief History of establishment and development

MISSION:

Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy has a mission to train human resources in the field of medicine and health sciences at the undergraduate and the graduate levels; scientific research, application, and technology transfer, protect, take care of and raise the health of populations in the Mekong Delta and other regions of Vietnam.

VISION:

To develop Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy into an application-oriented University of Health and Medical Sciences, a central university with advanced - excellence training programs integration spirit, with a modern and high-tech Hospital of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy was built and established on the foundation of the Faculty of Medicine – Dentistry - Pharmacy of Can Tho University, which was formed in July 1979, located in Campus II of Can Tho University.

From 1980 to 1993, the Faculty of Medicine officially had a new campus located within Campus III of Can Tho University, located at Ly Tu Trong Street, An Cu Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City, including a 3-story building (1.500 m2), and 1 office (50 m2). At this time, the Faculty only had 2 halls of 200 seats, 1 office, and 6 rooms that served as offices and practice rooms for basic subjects: Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pathophysiology, Embryology, Pathology, Parasitology, and Library.

Training: In 1979, the Faculty of Medicine trained the first full-time general medicine program with 95 students. In September 1983, the Faculty of Medicine trained an extra transitional training program (specialize in practice) of General Medicine. Since then, the Faculty only trained about 100 full-time medical students each year; and 100 to 150 transitional general practitioners have been trained annually since 1984. In 1985, the first training course for general practitioners had 95 graduates, and the school selected 20 doctors to become lecturers in the Faculty of Medicine. The school selects excellent and good graduate students to be trained to become the school's teaching staff every year.

In 1996, to meet the needs of expanding training of the medical human resource, the Faculty of Medicine was renamed the Faculty of Medicine - Dentistry - Pharmacy, officially training Odontologists. In January 1996, the entire Faculty was moved to a new campus at Campus II of Can Tho University, located at 3/2 Street, Xuan Khanh Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City.

In 2002, the University established a full-time undergraduate program in Pharmacy.

The university's old campus was the (old) Faculty of Medicine- Dentistry- Pharmacy of Can Tho University.

To train medical human resources for protecting and taking care of the population's health in the Mekong Delta and the whole country, on December 25, 2002, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 184/2002/QĐ-TTg to establish Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, based on separating the Faculty of Medicine – Dentistry - Pharmacy from Can Tho University. On March 22, 2003, the Ministry of Health held a ceremony to announce the Decision to establish the University and appoint Prof. MD. LE The Thu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Public Health and Hygiene, to be the Rector. There is officially a medical staff training school for Delta Mekong.

In the early years of establishment, the head office of the University was temporarily located at the former Faculty of Medicine - Dentistry - Pharmacy of Can Tho University, 3/2 Street, Xuan Khanh Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City. Moreover, the University’s officers and employees had to face many difficulties to ensure the training, such as: renting many locations in Can Tho city for teaching and learning activities.

After splitting from Can Tho University, the staff was only 217 (including 01 Associate Professors, 5 PhDs, 27 Masters, 01 secondary majors, 163 lecturers). The University has 04 faculties, including Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology, and Faculty of Public Health; 03 curriculum codes, including General Medicine, Odonto-Stomatology, Pharmacy, and no postgraduate curriculum code. The training scale is estimated at nearly 3000 students.

In 2003, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy cooperated with Ho Chi Minh University of Medicine and Pharmacy to provide specialized training at the level I in Family Medicine. In 2004, the university opened an intermediate-transferred bachelor program in Pharmacy and a Nursing major. In 2005, postgraduate training courses began. In 2007, the Faculty of Basic Science was officially established.

On April 2nd, 2008, the Ministry of Health signed the decision to appoint Prof. Ph.D. PHAM Van Linh, the former Rector of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, became the Rector of CTUMP.

In 2009, the Ministry of Health approved to open the training course of Preventive Medicine; the Faculty of Nursing - Medical Technology was established from the Nursing Department of the Faculty of Medicine. In 2010, the Bachelor of Public Health and Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine were added.

On March 3rd, 2008, the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the CTUMP campus was held. After nearly 3 years of construction, on December 31st, 2010, the university was officially moved to a new campus with 30.95 hectares, located at 179 Nguyen Van Cu Street, An Khanh Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City. Initial facilities include only 03 faculties: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Basic Science; 38 lecture halls for learning activities, 24 laboratories for student internships, and 1 large hall with 400 seats for academic activities and university festivals. There is no need for more rending venues.

On January 26th, 2011, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, located at 179 Nguyen Van Cu Street, An Khanh ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho city, was established by Decision No.270/QD-BYT of the Minister of Health, with missions of teaching and scientific research, technology transfer and medical examination and treatment for people in the region. This place has always been a reliable address in health care.

In 2012, the university continued to open a branch of Traditional Medicine. In 2013-2014, all 8 major codes were converted to the credit system.

To meet the needs of teaching, scientific research, and medical examination and treatment, the university constantly invests in building facilities, improving and upgrading necessary modern machinery step by step.

On November 20th, 2015, the University held the Inauguration Ceremony and put into use the Traditional Room to store and display documents and artifacts associated with the establishment, construction, and development of the University, contributing to the valuable legacy of education of previous human resources.

On October 20th, 2016, Can Tho Land Fund Development Center handed over the entire site of 30.95 hectares to the University. On January 7th, 2017, the University held the Inauguration Ceremony of the school construction investment projects phase 1. The total construction area of 7 blocks is 39,035 square meters; 44 halls with a capacity of 50 to 500 seats, 8 self-study zones, 7 E-learning and multimedia online classrooms, 94 practice rooms, 17 practice preparation rooms, 21 laboratories fully equipped with basic and modern equipment to ensure the teaching and research objectives. The ratio of classroom area to the number of students is 3.51. The library is equipped with documents, books, and computers with Internet connections for students' learning and self-study.

          On January 20th, 2017, the Minister of Health signed the decision to appoint Assoc. Prof. Ph.D. NGUYEN Trung Kien, Secretary of the University’s Party Committee, became the Rector of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

          On April 13th, 2017, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 455/QĐ-TTg on approval of the Project to innovate the functional structure of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

          On July 17th, 2017, the Minister of Health signed the decision to establish the University Council, and approved Prof. Ph.D. PHAM Van Linh, the chairman and Ph.D. MD. NGUYEN Minh Phuong, the secretary, and 17 members of the University Council.

          Through establishment and development, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy has tirelessly reinforced and improved to meet the responsibilities assigned by the Party and the government and meet the trust of the people in training quality, research and healthcare work. Currently, the University has 6 training faculties, 56 departments, 10 offices, 4 centers, 1 specialized unit, and 1 University Hospital with 657 staff members, 446 faculty lecturers (2 Professors, 15 Associate Professors, 36 PhDs, 226 Masters, 23 specialists level II and 4 specialists level I, 4 graduates). Annually, several excellent and volunteer students remained at the University to become lecturers. The work to train medical personnel for the Mekong Delta is further improved.

Following the directive of the Ministry of Health on meeting societal demands, the University regularly diversifies its training programs.   The University currently has 8 full-time programs based on the credits system, 2 programs for working people, 10 programs for Masters and PhDs, 42 programs for specialists level I and II, and resident doctors. The scale of the university's training programs now reaches 8000 undergraduate students and 1000 postgraduate students. Additionally, the University constantly opens short-term courses serving the demands and goals of the project to support the healthcare system in the Mekong Delta and training high-level specialties for the application of novel techniques and methods to healthcare and community health. The University implemented a renewal of curriculum and examination methods, alongside diversifying forms of training. The University always paid attention to improving the conditions to ensure the quality of training and constantly raising the credibility of the University.

Scientific research: The University always supports scientific research efforts. Annually, the University published medical journals; and connected with local government departments of science and technology for collaboration in research projects. The University lecturers chaired and participated in multiple important research projects, including those of government level and ministry level and grassroots level. The projects, conferences, and science workshops provided positive contributions to healthcare, both theoretically and practically. They helped to promote the nation's socio-economic development in the process of industrialization, modernization, and international integration.

International cooperation was constantly improved upon. The University established connections with universities, hospitals, and medical organizations around the world to further exchanges of knowledge, train personnel, and seek material and equipment support for research and education activities.

The university's financial resources were expanded, and the infrastructure was invested and built further to match the demand for teaching, research, and healthcare services. The lecture halls were equipped with advanced technology and cleanly maintained, suited for all available programs.

The organizations at the University proved to be capable and tireless in development. They contributed with meaningful events to the growth of the University and were highly valued for it.

With the excellence in construction, development, and contribution to the nation, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy was recognized with honorable awards by the Party and the government.
