CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSTS EXPERTS FROM DES MOINES UNIVERSITY (USA): EXPANDING INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION OPPORTUNITIES

On March 2, 2026, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy (CTUMP) officially welcomed and worked with experts from Des Moines University (DMU), USA. This working session marks a significant step in materializing commitments to training and student exchange between the two leading medical education institutions.

Strengthening Connections Based on Sustainable Cooperation

The meeting was conducted based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on April 4, 2022, between Des Moines University and CTUMP. The DMU expert was Dr. Keyah Levy, Director of the Global Health Program, accompanied by Ms. Thuy Le, a representative from GEI Vietnam.

Representing CTUMP were Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thanh Tan – Vice Rector, along with leaders and International Relations assistants from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Public Health, Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology, the University Hospital, and the University Administration Office.

Two sides discuss the future possibilities of collaboration

Promoting Student Exchange in Health Sciences

Within the framework of the working program, both sides focused on in-depth discussions regarding the possibility of organizing student exchange activities for the health sciences sector:

  • Shared Vision: Des Moines University, with a history dating back to 1898, is currently one of the prestigious medical training institutions in the United States with 11 graduate programs.
  • International Opportunities: DMU shared information about its network of 22 internship sites across 14 countries, with Vietnam identified as a key strategic partner for international internships and clinical observerships.
  • Discussion Content: Both parties reviewed and proposed potential directions for future cooperation. Besides sending American students to CTUMP, DMU acknowledged the demand for Vietnamese medical students to intern in the U.S. and committed to introducing suitable exchange slots in the future. Additionally, they discussed opportunities for research collaboration, including multi-country sample collection projects. DMU also noted the interest in continuing education courses from DMU and promised to recommend appropriate courses, including free ones, for CTUMP faculty members.

Experiencing the Training and Practical Environment

Prior to the official discussion, the DMU experts toured the campus, dormitories, and the multi-purpose sports area of CTUMP. Dr. Keyah Levy expressed her impression of the facilities and the dynamic learning environment.

In the afternoon of the same day, the delegation conducted field visits to the University’s practice hospital system, including:

  • Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital.
  • Can Tho City General Hospital.
  • Can Tho City Children's Hospital.

The tour provided the U.S. partner with a realistic view of clinical practice training capacity and the local healthcare system, facilitating the development of student exchange programs aligned with reality.

Towards the Future

This event is not merely a diplomatic meeting but also a testament to CTUMP's efforts in internationalizing medical education. Collaborating with an experienced institution in Global Health like DMU will open many opportunities for CTUMP students to access international medical standards while enhancing the University's position on the global education map.

The working session concluded in a warm and friendly atmosphere, promising a positive start for specific cooperation projects in the near future.
