As part of its strategy to expand international cooperation in education, research, and academic exchange, on March 27, 2025, a delegation from Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy (CTUMP) conducted an official working session with Ghent University – one of the top-ranking institutions in Belgium and Europe. The meeting took place at Ghent University Hospital (Campus UZ Gent), with participation from university leaders, faculty members, and program coordinators from both sides.

The CTUMP delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien (Rector) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Minh (Dean of the Faculty of Medicine), along with representatives from the Faculties of Odonto-Stomatology, Public Health, Nursing, Library, and the Skills Training Center. Ghent University was represented by professors, international coordinators, and specialists involved in ASEAN & South Asia collaboration platforms.

During the meeting, both institutions expressed a mutual interest in pursuing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) – a formal and institutional-level agreement that will serve as the foundation for student exchange programs and could potentially lead to broader academic and research collaboration in the future. Mr. Jean Dhont from Ghent University will provide CTUMP with a draft MoU template to facilitate the process.

Regarding the Medical Study Program, Ms. Cindy De Muynck from the Faculty of Medicine at Ghent University will share detailed information on eligibility requirements for international students. General information about the program for exchange students is available on the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences – Ghent University website.

The discussion also highlighted several potential international funding channels, including:

  • Global Minds Fund – supports knowledge exchange and academic cooperation initiatives.
  • Project 89 (Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam) – a national scholarship scheme to enhance the capacity of university staff from 2021 to 2030.
  • VLIR-UOS – facilitates cooperation projects between universities in Flanders and the Global South, addressing both global and local challenges.

CTUMP was also introduced to specific collaboration contact points:

  • For academic library development, further details are available at the Ghent University Library website. Suggested contact: Mr. Dries Moreels.
  • For Biomedical Engineering, inquiries can be directed to Prof. Patrick Segers for training programs and research cooperation.

This productive meeting has laid a solid foundation for a sustainable and impactful academic partnership between Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Ghent University.
