On August 9th, 2025, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Vietnam), in collaboration with Hong Anh Healthcare Group and the Modality Partnership (United Kingdom), successfully hosted the international conference “Primary Care and Population Health Fundamentals.” The event brought together over 150 delegates, including lecturers, students, and trainees, all sharing a strong interest in primary health care and family medicine.

Distinguished experts from the UK attended the conference, including Dr. Helen Jane Bhardwaj, Dr. Vipan Bhardwaj, and Mr. Vincent Sai. With extensive experience in family medicine, health system management, and public health, the speakers delivered insightful presentations that integrated the latest academic insights with practical experiences from advanced health systems. Topics included: The future of primary care and sustainable health systems; Leadership styles & dynamics, self-reflection; Regulatory and data breaches, vicarious liability, whistleblowing, safety culture; as well as Metabolic health, lifestyle medicine, diabetes prevention, behavior change, digital coaching; AI, automation, digital triage, failure demand, document processing, safety standards
Representing Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy (CTUMP), Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Van Lam, M.D., Ph.D., – Vice Rector of CTUMP, Dr. Thai Thi Ngoc Thuy, M.D., Ph.D., – Head of the Department of Family Medicine – and Dr. Nguyen Tan Dat, M.D., Ph.D., – Vice Dean of the Faculty of Public Health – took on actively contributed as coordinators, facilitators, and panelists. Speaking at the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Lam emphasized the importance of primary health care in improving community health quality and highly appreciated the significance of the cooperation program among Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hong Anh Healthcare Group, and Modality Partnership. He regarded this as a valuable opportunity to exchange experiences, update knowledge, and promote sustainable development in the health care sector. Their contributions helped contextualize the discussions, thereby making the knowledge more accessible and relevant to Vietnam’s health care system.

A key highlight of the conference was the session on the role of primary health care in the current digital era. Experts examined the potential of AI, big data, and digital tools to significantly enhance diagnosis, monitoring, and public health management, while also addressing issues of risk management in health care operations. The presentations were enriched with practical case studies, enabling participants to visualize and apply the concepts effectively.

Lifestyle medicine emerged as another key theme, emphasizing the critical role of behavior change, proper nutrition, physical activity, and digital support in preventing chronic diseases, especially diabetes, thereby reducing the burden on the health care system.
