CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE PROMOTE STRATEGIC COOPERATION IN THE FIELDS OF TRAINING, ACADEMIC EXCHANGE, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND LIBRARY DEVELOPMENT

On November 25, 2025, a delegation from Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy (CTUMP), led by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien, Rector, visited and worked at the University of Adelaide, Australia. The delegation visited, shared experiences in library management and cooperation, surveyed pre-clinical training models, promoted cooperation in the fields of training, academic exchange, scientific research, innovation and library development.

The delegation of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy included Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien, Rector; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Thi Thao, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Dentistry; Dr. Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, Director of the Library; MSc. Tran Bich Ngoc, Chief of Office of the Center for Medical Education and Medical Skills Training; and Dr. Phan Thi Luyen, Deputy Head of CTUMP Office.

The delegation was welcomed by Ms. Lori Hocking, Vice-Chancellor in charge of External Affairs; Prof. Amanda Page, Dean, International and Engagement, College of Health; Prof. Richard Logan, Dean, Adelaide Dental School, College of Health; and Prof. Corinna Van Den Heuvel, Dean, Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, College of Health; Other AU representatives included Assoc.Prof. Dr. Michael Ward, Acting Executive Dean, Clinical Health Science and Dean of Programs; Assoc.Prof. Adam Montagu, Director, Adelaide Health Simulation; Mr. Phillip Fredericks, Associate Director, Global Partnerships; Ms. Siân Woolcock, University Librarian and Ms. Åsa Hogben, Faculty International Advisor, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

During the working morning, the CTUMP delegation was led by Ms. Siân Woolcock - Director of the Barr Smith Library to tour the University of Adelaide campus. The delegation was particularly impressed with the Mitchell Building, an ancient building built of sandstone. The campus also stands out with a park lined with purple jacaranda trees, creating a beautiful and inspiring academic landscape.

The delegation visited Bonython Hall, one of the most iconic architectural works of the University of Adelaide. This is the Hall where formal graduation ceremonies are held and is the venue for many important university-level events.

Visiting the Barr Smith Library

The delegation visited the Barr Smith Library, a valuable source of academic documents, under the guidance of Ms. Siân Woolcock, Director of the Library. The Barr Smith Library is the main library and is known as the "academic heart" of the University of Adelaide. It is one of the three oldest university libraries in Australia, holding a massive collection of more than 2.5 million books and documents, including printed books, journals, electronic documents, and rare manuscript collections. The library not only serves the learning and in-depth research needs of students and lecturers, but is also an important open space of the University of Adelaide.

Surveying the modern dental training model

During the visit, the delegation took time to visit the Adelaide Dental Simulation Clinic in details. This activity was guided by Prof. Richard Logan, Dean of Adelaide Dental School, and Ms. Åsa Hogben.

The modern facilities, especially the clinical dental simulation area and the Medical Skills Training Center (Adelaide Health Simulation), were highly appreciated by the CTUMPers.

Speaking at the meeting, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien - Rector, Leader of the delegation emphasized the direction of expanding scientific cooperation: “We see the similarities and great potential in applying clinical simulation training models and skills training of the University of Adelaide to the curriculum at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. In addition to Dentistry, developing joint research topics in the fields of Medicinal Materials and Clinical Pharmacology is also a top priority in the coming period.”

Multidisciplinary training and research cooperation strategy

Ms. Lori Hocking expressed her warm welcome to the delegation of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, recognizing the important role of the university in training medical human resources in the Mekong Delta region.

In addition, Assoc. Prof. Adam Montagu, Director of the Adelaide Health Simulation, directly introduced the university's modern medical clinical simulation system.

The delegates discussed specific cooperation items, including the development of short-term student and lecturer exchange programs, joint implementation of multidisciplinary scientific research projects, and sharing experiences in operating international standard Medical Skills Training Centers.

The two sides introduced an overview of training, scientific and medical research activities, especially the strengths and potentials for cooperation between Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the University of Adelaide.

The working session ended successfully and reached an agreement on the next steps to concretize the potential for cooperation into practical programs:

- Exchange of cooperation on Libraries between the two universities.

- Cooperate in building a program framework for short-term exchange of lecturers and students in Dentistry and Pharmacy, focusing on clinical techniques and advanced research methods.

- Cooperate in scientific research between affiliated units.

- Cooperate in preclinical simulation training: sharing documents, standardized procedures and experience in operating Adelaide Health Simulation to support CTUMP in developing the Competency Assessment Center, Medical Education Center and Medical Skills Training Center according to international standards.
